2025 PGA Championship Round 1 leaderboard, live updates: Jhonattan Vegas jumps into solo lead as Rory McIlroy struggles

The second major championship of the season is off and running. And, just as everyone expected, it was Jhonattan Vegas who flew into the solo lead on Thursday night.

Vegas made five birdies in his final six holes to post his 7-under 64 at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina. That gave him a two-shot lead over the rest of the field at the PGA Championship. Vegas is now the first Venezuelan man to lead or co-lead following any major championship round in golf history.

For a long time, it looked like Ryan Gerard and Cam Davis were going to share the lead after the first round. They each posted a 5-under 66 to lead the way before Vegas’ charge.

The world’s top three players were grouped together, and only one — No. 1 ranked Scottie Scheffler — finished under par. Scheffler survived a pair of bogies and a double to card a 2-under 69. Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, had a rough go of it, carding a 3-over 74. Defending champ Xander Schauffele was one better at 2-over. They were complaining about the mud balls, too, which seemed to really throw everybody off.
