4 takeaways as Boston Celtics beat Spurs, get career night from reserve big

The Celtics continued their road dominance as they beat the Spurs 121-111 on Saturday in San Antonio. Not only is that the Celtics’ eighth straight win, but they’re also 5-0 on their six-game road trip. The C’s improved to 55-19 while the Spurs dropped to 31-42.

The Celtics built up multiple big leads throughout the game, threatening to blow out the Spurs and run away with the win. But the young, shorthanded Spurs did well to put pressure on the C’s, forcing them to close out the game with their starters. But the C’s never came close to dropping Saturday’s game as they executed to the finish.

The Spurs looked significantly different compared to the last time the teams played each other right before the All-Star break. Phenom Victor Wembanyama was shut down for the season due to blood clots, plus De’Aaron Fox had season-ending surgery on his left pinky finger. The Celtics were down a couple rotation players Saturday in Al Horford and Payton Pritchard.

Jayson Tatum was excellent in his return with 29 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Jrue Holiday added 21 points, six rebounds and six assists while Luke Kornet had another stellar game (more on him later). Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with 23 points while rookie Stephon Castle finished with 22 points and eight assists.

The Celtics face the Grizzlies, minus just-fired coach Taylor Jenkins, at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Memphis to wrap up their six-game road trip. Here are four takeaways from Boston’s win over San Antonio:

Star back: In a slight surprise, Tatum missed just one game due to the left ankle sprain he suffered against the Kings earlier this week. He sat the Suns win, but that seemed to be for precautionary reasons as he got in a workout ahead of that game Wednesday. Tatum was again his effective self, stuffing the box score in what’s becoming a nightly consistent. It looked like Tatum’s ankle sprain could have been an issue with the playoffs so close, but that won’t the case after all.

Stepping up: Kornet’s impressive season continued with another game-changing outing as the Celtics were down two of their rotation players. Kornet put up 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass, as he was seemingly everywhere on the night. He also finished a plus-21 in his 31 minutes as he’s been one of the best contracts in the league this season.

Chasing history: The Celtics not only keep winning games, but they also have a chance to match an NBA record. After Saturday’s victory, the C’s are now 31-7 on the road this season. That’s only three wins away from matching the NBA record for road wins. The 2015-16 Warriors, who went 73-9 overall, went 34-7 to set the all-time best road record. So the C’s have a real chance to catch the Warriors there with three road games left on the schedule. After facing the Grizzlies on Monday, the C’s have the Knicks on April 8 then the Magic on April 9 to close out the road portion of their schedule. So that’s something to keep an eye on ahead of the playoffs.

Scoring all over: Seven total Celtics finished in double-figure scoring Saturday as it was an overall balanced effort. The lone Celtic to not score at least 10 points was rookie Baylor Scheierman, who still finished with seven points in 19 minutes. Those are all positives for the Celtics as they’re playing great ball so close to the playoffs.
