49ers sign free agent QB many thought they’d pick No. 3 overall in 2021 NFL draft

The San Francisco 49ers have finally added a backup quarterback for Brock Purdy.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the 49ers agreed to a two-year, $11.5 million contract with former New England Patriots first-round pick Mac Jones. The deal comes with $5 million guaranteed.

Jones and the 49ers were heavily tied together in the lead up to the 2021 NFL draft. After the 49ers used a trio of first-round picks to move up to No. 3 overall, Jones was the player head coach Kyle Shanahan was infatuated by according to multiple reports at the time.

Shanahan wound up instead falling in love with North Dakota State’s Trey Lance, who made only four starts with the team before being traded ahead of the 2023 season.

Jones’s first year went dramatically better than Lance’s. He guided the Patriots to a 10-7 record and a postseason berth. It went downhill quickly after that, and by last season he’d been traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars. For his career, Jones is 20-29 as a starter with a 65.9 percent completion rate. He’s averaging 6.7 yards per attempt as a pro and has 54 touchdowns and 44 interceptions.

Last season the 49ers carried two backup QBs, Joshua Dobbs and Brandon Allen. Dobbs already agreed to join the New England Patriots. Allen remains unsigned, and the Jones addition for the 49ers likely closes the door on his return.
