A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Monday about two and a half miles south of Julian just after 10am.

The big picture : The quake was felt widely across the region — with the unmistakably shaking walls and ground coinciding with a shrieking warning from ShakeAlert, a United States Geological Survey notification that was sent to phones within seconds of people feeling the effects.

State of play: The USGS keeps a “Did You Feel It?” intensity map, with reported experiences ranging from strong shaking in the mountain area around Julian to moderate effects in east county and light shaking along the coast and as far north as Long Beach.

  • The city council relocated its meeting from City Hall’s council chambers to the San Diego Civic Theatre.
  • An email to city employees said City Hall was closed for the remainder of the day “to allow for additional inspections.”

The bottom line: Of the 5.2 magnitude quake and a handful of smaller aftershocks shortly after, the Union-Tribune wrote “sequences of this kind rarely lead to larger quakes.”on.
