Playing days are over for one of the best NFL wide receivers in the last decade.
Julio Jones, 36, officially retired from the NFL, he announced on social media on Friday.
“I’m making this announcement today because of the city of Atlanta,” Jones said in a video. “Thank you, man. I appreciate y’all. It’s nothing but love. I’m doing this on 404 day.”
Jones played for four different teams during his 13-year career, but he is undoubtedly an Atlanta Falcons legend.
Originally drafted out of Alabama at No. 6 overall in 2011, he made 7 Pro Bowls and caught 848 passes for 12, 896 yards and 60 touchdowns during his 10 years in Atlanta.
Jones totaled more receiving yards, yards after the catch and first downs off a reception than any other player in the league during his time with the Falcons and he passed Jerry Rice as the fastest player in NFL history to reach 12,000 receiving yards during the 2019 season. He holds numerous Falcons records.
“I want to thank my teammates in the league as well,” Jones said in the video. “Matt Ryan, thank you. It was a lockout in 2011. You went as far as taking me to your home, showing me the playbook, going to fields, going over plays. Thank you. I appreciate it, man. Roddy (White). Harry (Douglas). Eric Weems. Terry Robiskie. Mike Smith. Man, thank y’all. I appreciate y’all. Just for being up for me.
“Again, Roddy, Harry, teaching me the blueprint as far as a receiver, being a pro. Again, thank y’all. Y’all my brothers forever. Thank you. I appreciate you.”
After leaving Atlanta, Jones spent single seasons with the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles, but he wasn’t the same explosive weapon he was during his time with the Falcons. Jones hasn’t been active for a game since 2023.
His 13,703 career receiving yards ranks 16th in NFL history.
“I started when I was 8 years old, just a kid from Foley, Alabama,” Jones said in the video. “It was an amazing ride.”
