A former linebacker for the Michigan Wolverines is back in the spotlight — but not in the way that you would expect.
Mike Owens, a Detroit native who played at U-M from 1977-80, has been cast as the new “Golden Bachelor” on ABC, the network announced this week.
“Now, after several years as a devoted dad, Owens is ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship – sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple. As the Golden Bachelor, he’s eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years,” ABC said in a press release.
During his career at Michigan, Owens compiled 125 tackles and three interceptions under the leadership of former head coach Bo Schembechler. He was named to the All-Big Ten first team his final year in college before being picked No. 9 overall in the 1981 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He played his entire NFL career with the Rams and accumulated 453 tackles, 26.5 sacks, nine fumble recoveries and four interceptions.
Following his football playing days, Owens, 66, became a lawyer.
Owens isn’t the only Wolverine to do something like this recently. Earlier this year, former Michigan safety J’Marick (Jay) Woods was on the FOX show “Farmer Wants A Wife.”
The date of the new season has yet to be released, but it’s cool to see former Wolverines doing stuff like this and giving us a trip down memory lane. Hopefully he finds a long-term partner and gets what he’s looking for out of the show.
