On the formation lap before what was scheduled to be his F1 debut, Racing Bulls Isack Hadjar lost control on a wet area of the track and spun into the wall around the temporary circuit in Albert Park, Melbourne.
Rain all morning Sunday had the 20 F1 drivers preparing for a wet race in the Austrailian Grand Prix to open the 2025 season. Ahead of lights out, all 20 drivers went out on sight laps to see where the track was the most affected by the rain and to differentiate the newly painted white race lines from the standard street markers.
Hadjar was going slowly around for his formation lap when he spun out and ended up backed into the wall. The 2024 F2 runner-up was the highest qualifying rookie, missing Q3 on Friday by just one spot and set to start his first Grand Prix in 11th.
On the parade lap, the 20-year-old driver said his goal was to keep it out of the opening corners once the race went lights out; sadly, this worked as a preminision.
The race went into a 10-minute hold to reset the grid with Lance Stroll, the only driver not to choose intermediate tires, getting the chance to change to the field’s preference.
When the field went green, Hadjar was quickly joined by fellow rookie Jack Doohan, who lost it on the straight when he also put his wheels on the tricky white cycling and motorist lines.
As Doohan went around, so did Carlos Sainz in his first race with Williams, proving that this rainy Grand Prix will not discriminate between veterans and rookies when it comes to race-ending mistakes.
