The frustrating side of Jeremy Doku and Savinho’s games stood out against Brighton
Jeremy Doku and Savinho both had their moments to make an impact in Manchester City’s 2-all draw with Brighton at the Etihad yesterday. Savinho squandered two golden opportunities in the first half to get himself on the scoresheet. In the second half, Doku was Manchester City’s most dangerous attacking outlet on the left wing. But come the final whistle both players were a source of frustration based on the opportunities they squandered. That is something both players have to improve upon if they are to become the players they promise to be.
Savinho played 58 minutes yesterday before he was replaced by Bernardo Silva. The Brazilian international had his moments yesterday but he failed to take them. He had two golden opportunities to get himself on the scoresheet during the first half yesterday. His first shot from a good position came in the 24th minute which was saved by Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton goal. Simply put, Savinho should have scored. His second opportunity came in the 32nd minute which he squandered spectacularly. Not so for the finish, but more so for how much Savinho missed the target. That’s the biggest and clearest area of improvement that must come for Savinho.
Jeremy Doku is a different proposition entirely from that of Savinho. There is no doubt that Doku was Manchester City’s most dangerous player in the second half. But the problem with the Doku is his end product. This isn’t a new issue. But it stood out yesterday. The Belgian international could beat his man but didn’t create anything out of it. One particular piece of play stood out when he made a run across the pitch midway through the second half but failed to spot a magnificent run from Erling Haaland. The run was obvious to see what Doku missed it. That piece of play was the perfect microcosm of Doku’s afternoon. The challenge for Doku is to add that to his game. If he doesn’t he will be destined to forever be a tantalising prospect with no end product.

Jeremy Doku and Savinho had their moments against Brighton yesterday. The issue was that they didn’t seize their opportunities. Both players are young and have plenty to improve upon in their games. Yesterday was yet another reminder of this fact. The hope is that they both can further develop as players. The areas that they need to improve upon are clear to see, and ultimately, their wastefulness cost Manchester City yesterday.
