Packers HC Matt LaFleur called Jordan Love about Golden pick. ‘I gotta get my arm loose’

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said the draft room was “ecstatic” when the team picked wide receiver Matthew Golden on the first night of the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay.

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show April 25 outside Lambeau Field for the second night of the NFL draft, LaFleur said he FaceTime’d with quarterback Jordan Love who shared in the enthusiasm for the first-round pick.

“He was like ‘I gotta get my arm loose,’” LaFleur said. “That’s tough to throw to 4.29 (speed).”

LaFleur also gave credit to Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst and the scouting department for finding quality players who don’t cause problems in the locker room.

“Him and his staff do an unbelievable job of getting guys that in our building that have high football character. It’s important to him,” LaFleur said. “In order to get the most out of anybody, it’s got to be a priority to them. They got to love the game; they got to have a good head on their shoulders; and that is a priority for us. I don’t feel like we get as many problems here.”

LaFleur describe the first-round draft night atmosphere as “electric” and McAfee called the Green Bay and the surrounding area a “football movie.”

“We’re really proud of the product we put on out here,” LaFleur said.

LaFleur didn’t talk much more about Golden and was asked about transitioning to Love from Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.

“People probably don’t realize how tough that is. You go from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers and now you’re up Jordan Love,” LaFleur said. “There’s a lot of pressure that comes with that position.”

LaFleur said winning the division is the first step on the list of goals for the Packers for this coming season.

“That’s the starting point because it guarantees you a home playoff game,” LaFleur said. “We all know how hard it is come, especially here (in Green Bay), in January and win football games. We’ve got a great division and you can’t discredit what teams have done.”
