Post positions, morning-line favorites set for Kentucky Derby and Oaks

KENTUCKY DERBYSanta Anita Derby winner Journalism has been installed as the 3-1 morning-line favorite for the 151st Kentucky Derby.And the favorite drew a favorable post position. Trainer Mike McCarthy said he couldn’t have asked for anything better as Journalism drew the No. 8 post position for next Saturday’s Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs. I have found over the years that any post position can be good and any can be bad. I have been wiped out from posts that I thought were great posts. There’s a lot of speed down inside, they’re going to clear and we just need some luck.”There were not many horses that appear to be compromised by the post position.But one of those is Bob Baffert’s Citizen Bull, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion, who drew the No. 1 post position. The last Derby winner to capture the roses from the inside post position was Ferdinand in 1986.”It is what it is, you can’t worry about it once you have the draw, you can’t worry about it right now, the horses have to be ready to roll,” Baffert said. “It will be easy to watch. He does have a lot of speed, and once you get the one hole, I don’t need to give instructions what he’s going to have to do away from he’s going to have to leave there running, but the horse wants to do that anyway. Good Cheer is 6-for-6 lifetime and drew the No. 11 post position and was listed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite. She is trained by Louisvillian Brad Cox.
