Illinois State University said there was one victim in a shooting on campus at its Bone Student Center on Sunday.
They gave no information on the condition or identity of the victim. But they did release details of the suspect.
“Police are looking for [a] slender black male 5’10”, black afro hair style, wearing all black. Last seen running south from University and College Streets,” the university said in a post on X.
The student center remained closed, but there is no shelter-in-place order for the campus. Students were advised to stay away from the area.
“Police continue to investigate,” the university said, and urged witnesses with information to come forward.
The shooting happened around 7:40 p.m. during a “registered student organization event,” WGLT reported, citing authorities, and the shots were fired during a fight in the entryway outside the Bone center.
Maya Serrano, a freshman psychology major from Chicago, told WGLT she was working as event staff at the Bone on Sunday.
She said it was a large sorority event attended by families, supporters, and some children. “I was in the back, but I still heard them [the gunshot or shots],” Serrano told the network, adding that it was “like a flood” as people rushed to the doors.
“It was a tough situation to be in,” Serrano said. “There were just a lot of people running.”
This is a developing article and more information will be added soon.
