Our hometown hopeful stepped back into the spotlight on the “American Idol” stage, ready to compete for a top spot in the competition.
Josh King, 24, from Matthews was one of the Top 14 finalists who rocked the stage for Sunday’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night.
One by one, each of the remaining contestants sang their hearts out in hopes of winning over the judges and getting enough fan votes to advance to the next round of competition among the Top 12 — and avoid an elimination at the end of the episode.
With the competition heating up, where does the local singer and musician stand in the competition?
Spoiler alert: Here’s a recap of his performance and who was sent home.
Josh’s time with James Taylor
In honor of it being Rock & Roll Hall of Fame night, King and all the other contestants got help from North Carolina’s very own music legend James Taylor as a guest mentor.
“My mom introduced me to James Taylor when I was five or six years old and I’ve been listening to his music ever since,” King said when working with the famous singer-songwriter (who took time to meet his mom too!)
Singing a “song from fellow piano man, Billy Joel,” — as host Ryan Seacrest put it — King decided to perform “For the Longest Time,” a piece that Taylor particularly helped him with his technique of singing between his “chest voice” and “head voice.”
“When you go to your chest voice, it’s very hard to control the volume. You kind of risk your voice cracking doing those high notes,” King explained. “I am slightly mixed on it because I do like how flipping the head voice sounds but it is a very slippery slope.”
In the end, King pulled off a great performance and impressed judges. Here’s a snippet of what they said:
Carrie Underwood: “You’re one of our artists here that I feel like, you really know who you are. It’s a hard thing. You’re probably like, ‘What? What? I do?’ You appear to, at least, and I feel like that was a great song choice for you. You had fun with it. It was really nice.”
Luke Bryan: “Charming, endearing, throwing winks at the camera, kicking it back on the piano. It’s like … just another day at the office … Great job.”
Lionel Richie: “From here on out, push yourself. When I say push yourself, I mean go for the wall. OK? Because you’ve got the talent in spades. You can do it.”
So did Josh make it to the Top 12?
