St. Louis Cardinals vs Cincinnati Reds – April 28, 2025

After going 6-3 on their road trip, the Cincinnati Reds return home to Ohio with a 4-game winning streak to open up a series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm ET. The game will be on MLB Network for out of market viewers, and it is also MLB.tv’s Free Game of the Day.

Starting Lineups

Jake Fraley was a late scratch to the lineup. Blake Dunn took over in right field and also the 8th spot in the lineup where Fraley had been penciled in.

Starting Pitchers

Nick Martinez

It hasn’t been a good start to the year for Nick Martinez, but he’s coming off of his best outing of the season. Last week against Miami he allowed two runs in 5.2 innings.

The splits so far this season for Martinez aren’t all that good no matter how you look at them. He’s struggle to put right-handed hitters away and has seven walks with just 10 strikeouts. They are solid across the board against him. Lefties are hitting for a high average, but they aren’t walking at all against him so far this season. When they make contact they are hitting for a lot of power as nine of their 14 hits have gone for extra-bases.

The first three starts of the season went well for Andre Pallante and his ERA sat at 2.20 after a 7-shutout inning performance against Philadelphia. But his last two starts have seen him allow four runs in each outing and throw just 10.1 innings while allowing three home runs and striking out just three batters between the two games.

The platoon splits this season for Pallante are a bit strange. Right-handed hitters have walked nearly as much as they’ve struck out, and they’ve made contact at a high rate. But they haven’t hit much at all. Lefties are also making plenty of contact, but they are only hitting for a slightly better average, and they are getting on base less often. They are hitting for plenty of power, though.

Historically he’s had success against the Reds, going 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA in 15 games (five starts, 10 relief appearances). He’s never allowed a home run to the Reds in 39.1 innings pitched against them.
