Jarren Duran is no stranger to quality outfield defense, but he fell victim to a catch the Boston Red Sox have probably never seen before.
Duran led off the series opener Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays with a solo home run. Later in the game, Duran lashed another ball to center field. Toronto outfielder Daulton Varsho tracked the ball, stumbled on the warning track, got back up and backhanded the ball for one of the strangest yet circus catches in recent memory.
Here’s the catch from Varsho, as seen on the NESN broadcast.
The play could otherwise get lost in a dominant offensive effort from the Red Sox. Boston slugged five home runs to support seven strong innings from ace Garrett Crochet to secure a 10-2 victory for a third straight win on the road trip.
Duran scored a pair of runs and whacked his leadoff solo shot in the win for the Red Sox after a busy weekend on the base paths in a series win over the Cleveland Guardians.
