Former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback finds new NFL home

Former Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson is signing a one-year deal with the New York Giants, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

According to Schefter, the deal is worth $21 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed. The move puts Wilson in a Giants quarterback room that also includes recently-signed Jameis Winston and two-year veteran Tommy DeVito. Wilson and Winston project to battle for the starting role.

Wilson joins New York after spending the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He claimed the starting job from former Chicago Bears and Ohio State Buckeyes QB Justin Fields in Week 7 after battling an early-season injury. The former Badger quickly led the Steelers to six wins in seven games, sending the team to a 10-3 record and into contention for the NFC North.

Wilson and the Steelers would struggle significantly down the stretch, losing their last four regular-season games, three of which decisively, and falling 28-14 in the wild-card round to the rival Baltimore Ravens. Overall, Wilson played 11 regular-season games for the Steelers. His final stats include 2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions, plus 43 carries, 155 rushing yards and two rushing scores.

Wilson and Fields both signed elsewhere after the 2024 campaign — Wilson with the Giants and Fields with the New York Jets. The Steelers have yet to finalize their quarterback situation entering 2025. As of March 26, Aaron Rodgers is among the more likely candidates.

Wilson began his career with the Seattle Seahawks (2012-21). That time included a Super Bowl title and a run of the best football of his career. He was 104-53-1 in 10 years as the team’s starter, plus 9-7 in postseason play. He finished his Seahawk career with a grand total of 158 starts, 65% completion, 37,059 passing yards, 262 touchdowns and 87 interceptions, in addition to 846 carries, 4,689 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.

After that Hall of Fame-caliber run with Seattle, the former Badger was traded to the Denver Broncos before the 2022 season. His success quickly came to a halt. In two years in Denver, Wilson went 11-19, completing 63.3% of his passes for 6,594 yards, 42 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

His time in Pittsburgh can be viewed as a semi-resurgence. However, it did not land him a guaranteed starting job and long-term contract. This season with the Giants may be Wilson’s last chance to find such a role.
