Top 10 Players: Real Madrid 3-2 Borussia Dortmund

During the regulation 90 minutes at MetLife Stadium today, Real Madrid were in control. Not necessarily spectacular, not ruthless—just in control. Gonzalo García got the first, Fran García made it two before the 20-minute mark, and that looked safe enough.

Dortmund had the ball but not the punch. Then stoppage time arrived. Maximilian Beier pulled one back. Kylian Mbappé responded within a minute. Dean Huijsen was sent off. Serhou Guirassy scored from the spot.

A game that should’ve finished quietly was suddenly asking Madrid to dig deep and hold on. They did, barely, thanks to a miraculous save from Thibaut Courtois on literally the last kick of the game. Now PSG await, in the same venue.

Ramy Bensebaini of Dortmund led all players with 112 touches and 17 progressive passes, while Arda Güler topped the xT chart with 2.101 and finished second in progressive passes and first in carries. Five Madrid players featured in the top 10 for touches in the final third, and three—Güler, Fran García, and Tchouaméni—ranked in the top six for expected threat gain.

Arda Güler

His pass completion was at 94.4 percent. He played 13 progressive passes—only Bensebaini had more—and completed nine progressive carries, the most in the match. He registered 22 touches in the final third, two key passes, and two assists. His expected threat gain of 2.101 was the highest on the pitch.

Aurélien Tchouaméni

Tchouaméni didn’t put a foot wrong, which is exactly what Madrid needed from him. His 0.577 xT was sixth overall, but unlike most names on that list, he also spent large stretches shielding, not driving forward. He kept things clean, completed passes under pressure, added a key pass, and made four ball recoveries.

Fran García

He didn’t misplace a single long ball—100 percent completion—and was fourth in total touches. He ended with 20 final-third touches, six recoveries, and one key pass, finishing with 0.689 xT (fourth overall). His goal was cleanly taken. His flank was stable. And for a game that ended in chaos, his performance stayed remarkably tidy.
