Off-duty police officer shot and killed in Midtown; suspected gunman dead by suicide: sources

MANHATTAN, New York (WABC) — An off-duty police officer working a security detail for a company at 345 Park Ave.was shot and killed by a man with a long gunwho also shot at least one civilian before being found dead on the 33rd floor, according to multiple sources.

The shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. at the building that contains offices for Blackstone and the NFL headquarters. The building remains under lockdown and tenants are being told to shelter in place.

Police sources say the shooter entered the building and, while in the lobby, fired at a police officer, who was working private security at the time he was shot, and the civilian. Police sources say the shooting suspect killed himself on the 33rd floor of the building.

“At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch posted on X.

Some of the employees inside 345 Park Ave. have been advised that the threat “has been resolved,” but are being asked to continue sheltering in place and only leave the building with a police escort, according to a message sent to employees.

The officer was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, and the civilian was taken to Bellevue Hospital in unknown condition.

Officials are asking people to avoid areas near East 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue due to police activity.
