NYC mayoral candidates took to social media Monday to react to the news of a deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan.
Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was horrified by the news.
“I’m grateful for the courage of our NYPD and first responders, and my prayers are with the victims and their families,” he said in a post on X.
Cuomo has made public safety a central part of his mayoral campaign, along with proposals that include a plan to hire more police officers to tackle what he describes as a persistent crime problem.
Zohran Mamdani, who defeated Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary earlier this year, also took to social media after hearing news of the shooting.
“I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts,” a post on X reads.
Curtis Sliwa, called reports of the shooting “distributing,” and thanked first responders

New York lawmakers are reacting to the deadly shooting in midtown Manhattan today.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, wrote on X he was “deeply disturbed by the horrific shooting.”
“Praying hard for the brave NYPD officer impacted and all other victims of this tragedy,” Jeffries wrote. “May God watch over our city during this challenging moment.”
Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand also said on social media that she and her team were monitoring developments around the shooting.
“I’m praying for our first responders and everyone at the scene,” she said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he’s “praying for everyone affected,” adding that “we must do more to stop gun violence in America.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New York office is providing support to the New York Police Department in responding to the shooting in Midtown Manhattan.
“We are aware of the active crime scene occurring in Midtown Manhattan this evening,” the agency wrote in a post on X. “FBI New York agents are responding to provide support to the NYPD.”

A source previously told CNN that the officer was undergoing surgery.
The FBI is on the scene of a shooting in Manhattan today, according to the deputy director of the agency, Dan Bongino.
