PSA (if you didn’t already know): the best-selling video game of all time is finally becoming a blockbuster. A Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black, transports us to the Overworld for an exciting three-dimensional adventure. And in honor of the film’s release on April 4, McDonald’s is celebrating in style.
Starting today for a limited time, the fast food chain is offering a Minecraft collaboration complete with limited-edition collectibles and in-game perks for video game fans of all ages.
A Minecraft Movie Happy Meal is a standard meal with your choice of a hamburger or McNuggets. It comes in a themed box and includes one of 12 Blockhead toys. Each full-size meal comes with your choice of a Big Mac or 10-piece McNuggets and features one of six McDonald’s-themed Minecraft figurines and skins to use in the game.

Aside from the cool collectibles, there’s one item from the Minecraft collaboration you don’t want to miss: the Nether Flame Sauce. McDonald’s is serving a limited-edition dipping sauce inspired by the game’s fiery underground dimension.
I got the chance to try the Nether Flame Sauce ahead of the launch. Here’s what you need to know before you order it.

McDonald’s says that the Nether Flame Sauce tastes like “crushed red pepper and flaming cayenne, balanced with hints of garlic and sweetness.” And true to their word—and to the inspiration—it’s definitely spicy.
I’d describe myself as a person with a pretty high spice tolerance—and this sauce is hotter than any other sauce on the McDonald’s menu. I would consider this sauce to be medium on the heat scale. But if you’re wary about spice in general, I recommend proceeding with caution.
As McDonald’s described, you can identify some garlic flavor and a nice amount of sweetness. But, aside from the spice, the Nether Fame Sauce primarily tastes like vinegar. Don’t freak out though! It’s not a bad thing.
The best comparison I can make is to a vinegar-based hot sauce like Frank’s Red Hot or Crystal. Those hot sauces are traditionally used to coat crispy chicken wings. Once you factor in the added sweetness, the Nether Flame Sauce tastes like a combination of Buffalo and sweet-and-sour sauce.
I admittedly found the acidity to be a bit too overwhelming for fry dipping. But for McNuggets? It’s a match made in heaven.
