Game 8 Preview: Tigers look to clinch series win over ChiSox on Saturday

The Detroit Tigers gave the crowd inside Comerica Park something to celebrate on Friday afternoon, overcoming the Chicago White Sox, 7-4, in their 2025 home opener. It was anything but a sure thing until the final out as the visitors rallied in the ninth inning, but at the end of the day, the Olde English D prevailed.

Now, AJ Hinch’s squad has a chance to win its second-straight series of the nascent campaign, which would also bring the team up to the .500 mark for the first time this spring. Believe it or not, Detroit is currently among the top 10 in batting average (.268) as well as OBP (.348) and slugging (.454), while the pitching staff is still trying to sort things out.

Reese Olson is next up in the rotation and will be counting on his offense to back him up against Davis Martin. Here is a look at what to expect out on the bump Saturday afternoon in the D.

OLSON

MARTIN

Baby Face Reese got spanked in his 2025 debut to the tune of four runs on four hits (one dinger) and a pair of walks in 4 2⁄3 innings; however, he did strike out five. It was not exactly the start we had hoped for, but keeping in mind that it was against the juggernaut Los Angeles Dodgers, there is still plenty of room for optimism early on.

Martin opened up his third MLB campaign allowing two earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks over six frames while striking out a pair of Los Angeles Angels batters. However, his efforts went in vain as L.A. ultimately fell, 3-2, giving him a no-decision. Compared to his past stats, his performance was way above par, so he will likely regress sooner than later.
