Ex-Steelers WR could lose head coach job as school ponders eliminating football

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery could be out of his head coach job.

Cotchery is the head coach at Limestone University, but the school is considering shutting down all in-person activities, including athletics and classes. The school could move to an all-online education form.

Limestone, a Division II school in the NCAA, has become a powerhouse at that level, producing multiple Division I transfers and even some professional football talent, such as wide receiver Jelani Baker, who is currently in the UFL with the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Following news from the school that it is considering full closure, multiple players have entered the transfer portal. Cotchery released a statement on X.

“Words can’t express how heartbroken I am for my staff and players after hearing Limestone University is closing. They have poured everything into making this a respected program across the country! You won’t find a better group of people. It was a joy working with them every single day! We had an incredible staff, roster, and 2025 signing class! If you need a reference on any of them feel free to reach out. Thank you to EVERYONE, especially the families, who supported us over the past three seasons! I love you all and will forever be grateful,” Cotchery said.

The former Steelers wide receiver became the head coach at Limestone in 2024. Previously, he served as the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach from 2022 to 2023. Cotchery’s first experience as a coach was as the assistant wide receivers coach with the Carolina Panthers.

He had a long playing career, including three seasons with the Steelers from 2011 to 2013. A fourht-round pick out of NC State in the 2004 NFL Draft, Cotchery played 11 seasons in the NFL.
