Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has always been upfront about his battle with his mental health. In a new Netflix docuseries about the team, “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox,” Duran revealed that he attempted to take his own life after a rough season in 2022. Fans began heckling Duran in stadiums, and the 28-year-old was also on the receiving end of online attacks. Duran said he attempted suicide with a rifle, but when the weapon didn’t discharge, he took that as a sign from God that he was meant to be here. “The bravery and the courage that it takes to come out and speak on your own mental health issues, to speak about being in the really dark places and the hard places, it’s just something that shows people that they’re not alone,” Samaritans Chief Clinical Officer Kacy Maitland said. Maitland said Duran’s willingness to open up about his battle could help save lives. “When you have someone who is so successful and has made it so far share a story that is so connected to other people’s stories and things they’ve gone through — it just allows them to see themselves in people who have achieved great things,” Maitland said. During the Sox’s spring training in Florida, Duran opened up to WCVB about the positive impact he’s already seen after disclosing his mental health challenges. “I’ve actually had a lot of people reach out to me and kind of let me know because I opened up about it, they’re starting to talk about it,” Duran said. “So, always hearing a message like that makes it worth it to keep going and keep fighting.”Red Sox manager Alex Cora chimed in, saying that Duran’s openness will help save lives. “I truly believe him opening up is going to help a lot of people. It takes a person with courage and transparency to do that,” Cora said. “That’s how we see it, that he’s gonna impact others, and he’s gonna save lives with what he did.”If you or someone you know needs help, you can talk with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or sending a text message to 988, or you can chat online here.
