After sneaking away with a truly bizarre series win over the Astros, the Mariners face another AL West rival in the division-leading Texas Rangers, who have won seven of their last 10 games. They’ll bring with them a slate of very tough pitching, starting tonight with their capital-A Ace, Jacob deGrom.

Julio remains in the leadoff spot. Miles Mastrobuoni, who was a key contributor in Wednesday’s win, will handle duties at third with Rivas at second base; Dylan Moore gets an off day against the righty deGrom.

  • Casey Legumina has been called up from Tacoma to provide some relief for a bullpen that’s been stretched paper-thin. Luis F. Castillo was optioned to Tacoma to make space.
  • Victor Robles met with the media pregame; he says he feels about as good as can be expected, and they’re waiting on future x-rays, within the week, before he’ll get a more concrete timeline.
  • The Mariners’ shipment of the much-ballyhooed torpedo bats finally came in today and players were seen using them during BP; no idea if they’ll be used in the game or not.

Dan Wilson, on the team’s propensity to score late in games and come back:

“Sometimes you feel surprised by it, but you’re like, this is what they do, over and over again. This is a team that continues to really push. Every team goes through this stuff, and certainly having these couple of injuries that are a little bit longer term early is tough. But these guys have a lot of heart inside, and we’ve seen it on display.”

  • 1984 – Rookie first baseman Alvin Davis makes his Major League debut and becomes only the second Mariner to homer in his first big-league game, hitting a three-run homer off Dennis Eckersley.
  • 1990 – The Mariners get no-hit for the first time as former Mariners Mark Langston (7.0 IP) and Mike Witt combine for a no-hitter in a 1-0 Angels win.
  • 1996 – Dan Wilson becomes the fifth Mariner to hit three home runs in a game in a 9-1 win at Detroit.
  • 2001 – Ichiro goes Star Wars:

2015 – Nelson Cruz hit his first home run as a Mariner—a 439-foot, 3-run home run in 8th inning to lead Seattle to a 5-4, 11-inning victory over the A’s. While I cannot find video of that, on the same day in 2022, Nelson Cruz scored when Victor Robles was hit by a pitch to force in a run while both were teammates for the Nationals, which feels Mariners-adjacent enough. Also: yes, that’s current Mariners first base coach Eric Young Jr. at first base for Washington. Get well soon, Vic.
