Alex Ovechkin found paydirt one final time during a memorable 2024-25 regular season.
In the Washington Capitals’ season finale against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ovechkin rifled a one-timer past Alex Nedeljkovic’s catching glove, notching his 897th career goal. The goal was Ovi’s third career tally against Nedeljkovic.
In what was a similar play to his record-breaking 895th career goal, Ovechkin took a slick cross-ice pass from Dylan Strome before firing his shot from the top of the left circle. The power-play goal narrowed the Penguins’ lead to 3-2 with 3:04 remaining in the second period.
Ovi’s tally gave him 44 goals in 65 games played this season, a staggering 0.68 goals per game — the fifth-highest rate of his career. The goal also tied Ovechkin with Gordie Howe — 44 goals at age 40 during the 1968-69 season — for the most goals by a player age 39 or older.
Ovechkin ended up finishing third in the NHL in goals this season despite missing 17 games — most of which were due to a broken leg. Only 29-year-old Leon Draisaitl (52 goals) and 28-year-old William Nylander (45 goals) had more this season.
The power-play goal marked Ovechkin’s 14th this season and the 326th of his career — extending his lead over second-place Dave Andreychuk by 52.
Per Capitals PR, Ovechkin has 43 goals in 80 career games against the Penguins — the most among active players and the sixth most all-time. Twenty-six of those 43 goals came on the road.
The game at Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena marked the 73rd career time Ovechkin played against longtime rival Sidney Crosby over the last 20 seasons. Crosby scored five minutes beforehand for his 33rd goal of the season and the 624th goal of his career.
Ovechkin’s 44 goals this season were a remarkable 13-tally improvement from his age-38 season.
