ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The National Transportation Safety Board will be holding its second media briefing on Monday at 3 p.m. to provide another update on the deadly plane crash that occurred in the town of Copake on Saturday. You can watch the stream in the video player above.
On Saturday, at about 12:06 p.m., a Mitsubishi MU-2B-40 airplane crashed in a muddy flat field near State Route 23 and Two Town Road, according to authorities. Six people were killed as a result of the crash, according to the Associated Press. The “close-knit family of physicians and distinguished student-athletes” was reportedly traveling to the Catskills for a birthday and Passover holiday celebration.
NTSB, the federal agency leading the investigation into the crash, held its first media briefing on the crash on Sunday. During the conference, officials confirmed that the plane had departed from the Westchester County Airport and was on its way to the Columbia County Airport, about 10 miles away from the crash site.
According to NTSB Investigator Albert Nixon, the pilot of the plane, identified by the AP as Michael Groff, reported a missed approach and was going to attempt another. However, as he was being rerouted to approach the airport again, the flight radar reportedly signaled a low altitude alert for the aircraft.
“The [air traffic] controller attempted to relay this low altitude alert to the pilot and also tried to contact him three additional times,” Nixon said. “Unfortunately, he was inaccessible — there was no response from the pilot and there was no distress call.”
NTSB Board Member Todd Inman also reported on Sunday that obtained video showed that the aircraft appeared to be intact and crashed at a high rate of descent into the ground. Following impact, the aircraft was “compressed, buckled and embedded into the terrain.”
