Leslie Odom Jr. to Return as Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway for the First Time in Almost a Decade

The post Leslie Odom Jr. to Return as Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway for the First Time in Almost a Decade appeared first on Consequence.

After almost a full decade away from the character, Leslie Odom Jr. is set to reprise his role as Aaron Burr for an upcoming run of Hamilton on Broadway.

Odom originally played the role during the earliest days of Hamilton, following the production on its ascent from off-Broadway to the Great White Way. After winning a Tony for his performance in 2016, the performer left the show to pursue other projects. Now, he’ll return as Aaron Burr for a limited run of Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, with dates running from September 9th through November 23rd.

“Returning to Hamilton is a deeply meaningful homecoming,” Odom said of his return. “I’m so grateful for the chance to step back into the room — especially during this anniversary moment — and to revisit this brilliant piece that forever changed my life and the lives of so many.”

Jeffrey Seller, lead producer of Hamilton, added, “When I saw Leslie perform ‘The Room Where It Happens’ at the first act two workshop of Hamilton, I knew I was witnessing a historic moment. How lucky we are that Leslie is returning to Hamilton and bringing his indelible Burr back to Broadway.” Lin Manuel Miranda also reacted to the news on Instagram, writing, “Well, if it isn’t Aaron Burr… Welcome back [Leslie Odom Jr.], I can’t wait to see you again.”

In his years away from Hamilton, Odom appeared in a handful of other Broadway productions, including Gutenberg the Musical and a revival of Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch. He has also stepped in front of the camera for television and film roles, including Abbott Elementary, One Night in Miami, The Many Saints of Newark, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and more.

Having debuted on August 6th, 2015, Hamilton is quickly approaching its 10th anniversary. Its original cast recording — which includes Odom as Burr — is available on vinyl and CD. Revisit our review of the Disney+ movie here.

Last month, Seller canceled a scheduled run of Hamilton at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in light of the “recent purge by the Trump Administration of both professional staff and performing arts events at or originally produced by the Kennedy Center [that] flies in the face of everything this national cultural center represents.”
