MLB star Ohtani Shohei on ‘paternity list’ for birth of first child | NHK WORLD-JAPAN News

Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Dodgers stayed behind in California as his team faced the Rangers in Texas on Friday. Ohtani was placed on the “paternity list” as he and his wife await the birth of their first child.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game in Arlington, Texas, “I don’t know when they’re going to have the baby, but obviously they’re together in anticipation.”

Roberts told reporters he does not know when Ohtani would be back in the lineup, but said “there’s certainly a chance” that he comes back this weekend.

In MLB, players can miss up to three days while on paternity leave.

Ohtani revealed in December that he and his wife, Mamiko, were expecting a baby. His Instagram account showed a pink onesie and baby shoes, saying, “Can’t wait for the little rookie to join our family soon!”

At an event for fans in February, Ohtani said he was both anxious and excited, and that he simply hopes the baby is born safely. He also said he hopes his dog, Dekopin, better known as Decoy in the United States, will help look after the baby.
