Opinion | The cowardice is out of control

The president of the United States is nuts.

There should be no pearl clutching or teeth gnashing over this statement. You know it’s true. His Easter message on Sunday just drove the point home – this is a deeply, deeply disturbed human who functions on a dangerous combination of narcissism and indecency.

“Happy Easter to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics …,” Trump began his Easter message to Americans. He also worked in MS-13 and gang leaders, talked about “weak” judges and law enforcement, took a shot at “sleepy” Joe Biden, whom he also called a “moron.”

That was his Easter message. And you know – you 100-percent, without-a-doubt, don’t-even-try-to-pretend-otherwise know it – is utterly bat guano insane.

Which means, we will now be treated to two days of what has become the worst part of the Trump regime: The onslaught of spineless, gutless Republicans trying to normalize it and sanitize it.

That’s how we ended up in our current state of affairs, where a modern-day U.S. president is threatening to invade allies, talking openly of remaining in power past two terms, trying to change the constitution through executive order, denying people due process protections and systematically destroying the U.S. economy through an unelected co-president.

We got to this point because Republicans have been thoroughly and utterly intimidated by this overgrown bully, who they’ve allowed to push them into corners and who routinely pressures them into supporting his insanity.

This is not speculation. I’ve heard it directly from multiple Republican senators and congressmen. Just this past week, Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski made a stunning public admission.

“We are all afraid,” Murkowski said. “It’s quite a statement. But we are in a time and a place where I certainly have not been here before. And I’ll tell you, I’m oftentimes very anxious myself about using my voice, because retaliation is real. And that’s not right.”

She was talking directly about Trump and his team of thugs who call relentlessly and press senators and congressmen to follow their lead, to get in line, to support idiotic agendas and to stick to the talking points the White House provides. It’s why some of the more moderate Republicans – or some of the Republicans we all expected to be far, far more moderate – are issuing statements that support or give cover to some of Trump’s more dictator-y ideas.

Now, do not mistake what I’m saying here as excusing these politicians. I am not. I’m doing the opposite. I’m pointing out that otherwise smart and decent humans have allowed themselves to be shoved in a school locker by an unserious doofus who has never placed anything above his own enrichment or his own ego.

They should have shoved this clown aside a decade ago and been done with it.

Instead, there’s now a full brigade of the brain dead, with people like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Tommy Tuberville occupying space in our government. And a cabinet filled with the worst possible humans for every job. That includes the Defense Secretary, who is so good at sharing U.S. war plans that he should open an OnlyFans account and get paid for it.

All of it set up to continually tell the emperor that his nonexistent clothes are awesome.

This is how we ended up shipping non-criminals, including women, to a maximum security prison for men in a foreign country – because no one on the right (outside of, remarkably, the Supreme Court) – has dared take a stand against Trump and his band of ghouls. Instead, we have senators worried about people criticizing the ICE agents who are carrying out some of the most egregious violations of human rights – the same senators who haven’t uttered a peep about this president pardoning a bunch of people who attacked and beat police officers.

Roll all of this together in a great big ball and it’s how we arrive at this point in our country’s history – where we’re teetering on the edge of authoritarianism.

One of the truly remarkable things, though, is that a whole bunch of people who used to carry around pocket-size U.S. constitutions are all of a sudden perfectly willing to rewrite entire sections on the fly. I mean, we’ve had to overlook the mass murder of elementary school children because we don’t dare alter any portions of the constitution, but now you same people are cool with denying due process, ending birthright citizenship by executive order and just forgetting about that whole two-term limit thing?

What is wrong with y’all? Where is your spine? Where is your pride? Where is all of that devotion to the constitution and the country?

Those founders you all love to talk about … they’d be disgusted by what’s happening. By the creep of authoritarianism, the embracing of religion, the lack of participation in government by so many citizens, and especially the absolute cowardice.

Especially in deference to a nut.
