As a mother of a teen boy, Netflix’s new drama is terrifying

Any parent watching Adolescence — the searing Netflix drama about a 13-year-old boy whose ill-advised interactions with a girl on Instagram lead to tragedy — will no doubt cry and rage and feel terrified that something similar might happen to their child. Because the jeopardy around how boys and girls conduct themselves on social media these days is very real and quite terrifying.

As the mother of a 14-year-boy and 18-year-old girl, I hear stories all the time of children who have been called out for inappropriate behaviour or comments about others on Instagram and Snapchat. Often they have been in the wrong. Should have known better. Been disrespectful. Objectifying. You think, have they learnt nothing in their PSHE (personal, social, health and economic) classes?
