BALTIMORE — The Red Sox sought to boost their righthanded power production in 2025. On Thursday, they offered evidence of a team primed to do just that.
Alex Bregman and Kristian Campbell delivered a pair of two-run homers to propel the Sox to an 8-4 victory in the rubber game of a three-game series against the Orioles. The Red Sox return home from their season-opening seven-game road trip with a 3-4 record punctuated by a pair of impressive wins.
Bregman gave the Sox an instant advantage in the first. After Rafael Devers negotiated a one-out, seven-pitch walk against Baltimore starter Charlie Morton, Bregman jumped on a first-pitch fastball and drilled the ball 397 feet into the left-field grandstand at Camden Yards for his first homer as a Red Sox and a 2-0 lead.
While the Orioles trimmed the deficit by one run when Cedric Mullins led off the first with a solo homer against Tanner Houck, the Red Sox quickly retaliated with another flex of their own. After Wilyer Abreu’s leadoff walk to lead off the second, Campbell negotiated a full-count against Morton before yanking a curveball down the left-field line for another two-run homer and a 4-1 Sox advantage.
With the roundtripper, Campbell now has six extra-base hits (2 homers, 4 doubles) in his first seven career games, tied for second most in team history, behind only the seven from Will Middlebrooks at the start of his career.
While the Orioles scratched out single runs in the third and fourth, the Sox offense kept the team comfortably ahead all game. Boston tacked on another run in the fifth on a Jarren Duran sac fly, then two more in the seventh when Triston Casas, taking advantage of dimensions in left field that were reconfigured at Camden Yards for season — drilled a fastball from lefty Keegan Akin just over the fence in left-center for a two-run homer that put the Sox ahead, 7-3. It was the first left-on-left, opposite-field homer at Camden Yards since June 2021.
Bregman later added an RBI double in the ninth, concluding a 3-for-5 day with three extra-base hits.
Sox starter Tanner Houck had a mixed-bag outing. After he gave up a pair of hits (including the solo homer by Mullins) to start the game, the righthander settled to retire the next seven batters. On a number of occasions, his signature sweeper reclaimed its characteristic Wiffleball movement, contributing to six strikeouts in four innings. That said, he was far from overpowering, ultimately allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks over four-plus innings.
Houck was pulled after hitting Mullins in the foot to lead off the fifth. With the Sox leading, 5-3, reliever Zack Kelly offered instant relief, eliciting a 4-6-3 double play and then an inning-ending groundout on which Bregman at third made an excellent play.
Kelly’s effort kickstarted an impressive performance from the Red Sox bullpen, which allowed one run in five innings. Kelly, Justin Wilson, and Justin Slaten each contributed a scoreless frame, while Garrett Whitlock allowed one run over the final two innings to complete the relay. The Sox bullpen has a 2.05 ERA through seven contests, best in the American League.
