BOSTON — Unsurprisingly, Alex Bregman made himself right at home at Fenway Park.
Bregman bullied the ballpark as a visitor — hitting .325 with a 1.013 OPS as a member of the Astros — and picked up where he left off in his Red Sox debut at Fenway. Bregman poked an RBI double down the left field line in his first at-bat and went 2-for-4 with a walk, scoring two runs.
“The place was rocking,” Bregman said after a 13-9 win over the Cardinals. “I had a lot of fun.”
A villain for his first nine seasons in Boston, Bregman received loud ovations during player introductions and after his early double.
“It was really cool,” Bregman said. “Playing here, you know how much of a homefield advantage the Red Sox have because of their fans. To be here playing for this organization now, it’s a lot of fun and I don’t take it for granted. It’s an honor to be here and I’m looking forward to continuing to compete.”
So what is it that Bregman would like to be known for in Boston?
“Just somebody who shows up ready to play every single day,” Bregman replied. “Somebody who is prepared. Plays hard. Loves the game. Loves his teammates. Wants to get after it and compete and win.”
Alex Cora knew Bregman would indeed be ready, but implored the third baseman not to show up to the ballpark too early.
“I actually texted him last night. I said, ‘Don’t show up at 6:00 in the morning, please’ because I know he’s that excited,” Cora cracked.
Bregman said he waited until 8:00 or 8:30 to show up — only six hours before first pitch — but Cora’s prediction about his restlessness was spot on.
“I couldn’t sleep last night a little bit,” Bregman said. “I don’t know if it just was the travel or maybe the excitement, but hopefully go home and get a good night sleep tonight.”
