WASHINGTON (7News) — The Great Eight has tied the Great One in all-time NHL goals.
Alex Ovechkin scored his 894th goal in the 3rd period against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, tying Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s All-Time leading goal scorer.
As soon as the score was confirmed, a packed crowd at Capital One Arena broke into a standing ovation that lasted several minutes.
Ovechkin tied the record in dramatic fashion, notching two goals against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Ovechkin scored his first goal three minutes into the first period. He had a chance to score early on in the second period, but the puck was tapped in by a Blackhawks player, making it an own goal.
Among those in the crowd at a bustling Capital One Arena was Gretzky, who spoke about Ovechkin during intermission before the second period.
