American Airlines plane bound for D-FW Airport catches fire at Denver airport

DENVER — An American Airlines plane caught fire while sitting at a gate at Denver International Airport on Thursday, prompting slides to be deployed so passengers could evacuate quickly.

An airport spokesperson told multiple news outlets that the plane was at gate C38 when the fire started Thursday afternoon.

A photo posted by a local television news station showed passengers standing on a plane’s wing as smoke surrounded the aircraft.

No injuries were reported, and firefighters put out the blaze by the evening, the spokesperson said.

According to KDVR-TV, the flight had departed Colorado Springs Airport and was headed to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport before being diverted to Denver.

Citing a statement from American Airlines, the station said the Boeing 737-800 was carrying 172 passengers and six crew members when the aircraft was rerouted because of an “engine-related issue.”
