Bowling Green declares state of emergency amid flooding

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – Mayor Todd Alcott has declared a state of emergency to fast-track disaster response and begin the process of requesting federal assistance through FEMA.

Emergency responders and city officials continue to monitor hazardous conditions as residents begin assessing damage and seeking assistance.

Debi West, Public Information Officer for the City of Bowling Green, stressed the importance of avoiding floodwaters due to severe contamination and safety risks.

“There is a high probability that floodwaters are contaminated with raw sewage,” said West. “It is extremely hazardous to your health. People do not need to get into this water for any reason.”

Fire departments have been conducting water rescues across the city over the last several days.

“We have received multiple water rescue calls, but so far the city fire department has had only two physical water rescues,” said West.

In addition to rescue operations, city departments are also monitoring developing sinkholes and blocked storm drains. Road closures remain in effect across several corridors, including Nashville Road and Cave Mill Road, where a vehicle was pulled from deep water Sunday.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel as multiple roads remain flooded and closed off with barriers and law enforcement. Officials say anyone caught bypassing roadblocks will be cited.

WBKO will monitor the very latest on when funding becomes available and have resources online for residents.
