Cave City placed under state of emergency due to damage from Friday night severe storms

CAVE CITY, Ark. (KATV) — Cave City Mayor Jonas Anderson declared a state of emergency after severe storms destroyed buildings and power lines on Friday night.

“I have declared a state of emergency in the City of Cave City,” Anderson said. “We need citizens not directly involved and authorized to be involved in rescue or recovery to stay off the streets. Travel in town is difficult and dangerous. Please stay out of the way of our emergency services teams.”

Anderson said the City is establishing a command center to assess and address emergency needs.

“We are establishing a command center, assessing immediate rescue needs, and setting other plans in place,” he continued. “We ask for your prayers and your cooperation as we do this. We will provide updates as soon as we have steady phone and internet service.”

“God bless our community and all those being called on to give their best in our time of need.”

Anderson provided an unofficial count of 5 injuries, 3 of whom were medically transported to a hospital. He said that all 5 were expected to be okay.

“The major damage area seems to be a line east / northeast from the cemetery to West Center St., across Main St. at the intersection, across the neighborhood there to North St., and behind the high school, and on eastward from there into the county.” Anderson said.
