Second-half goals from Edier Ocampo and Brian White led the Whitecaps to a 2-2 draw with Monterrey on Wednesday in Torreon, Mexico, as Vancouver won the teams’ CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 match.
The teams finished the two-game, total-goal series level at 3-3, but the Whitecaps advance to the quarterfinals thanks to the away-goals tiebreaker. The sides played to a 1-1 draw last week in Vancouver.
On Wednesday, Monterrey grabbed the advantage on a goal by Sergio Canales in the fourth minute.
Ocampo equalized in the 56th minute, firing a 12-yard right-footed shot inside the far post to complete an impressive team counterattack.
White put the Whitecaps on top in the 78th minute after Vancouver stole the ball at the top of the Monterrey 18-yard box. The ball popped free to White, who had time to play the ball onto his right foot and roll the ball inside the right post.
A penalty-kick goal by Monterrey’s Sergio Ramos deep into second-half stoppage time wasn’t enough for the hosts.
