DALLAS (TNND) — The suspect in the Dallas school shooting that injured five on Tuesday was identified as another Wilmer-Hutchins High School student, according to an arrest affidavit.
Tracy Haynes Jr., 17, faces a charge of aggravated assault mass shooting and is being held at the Dallas County Jail on a $600,000 bond, online records show.
The affidavit reviewed by WFAA detailed how an “unidentified student” let Haynes into the school through an unsecured door before he walked down a hallway and spotted multiple male students. Officials said Haynes “displayed a firearm and began firing at the students indiscriminately,” hitting five of them.
It was reported that Haynes then approached a student “who was not able to run and appeared to take a point-blank shot at the student.”
Police said Haynes turned himself into authorities Tuesday night. No motive for the shooting has been provided.
The Dallas Independent School District reported a “shooting incident” at the school just after 1 p.m.
Dallas-Fire Rescue confirmed three people were shot, and a fourth person was grazed. The victims’ ages ranged from 15 years old to 18 years old.
Helicopter footage from multiple news outlets showed police vehicles, fire trucks, and paramedics surrounding the school. Students could also be seen running from the school as crews were dispatched to the area.
Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Elizalde said during a news conference that school has been canceled for the rest of the week and mental health resources will be provided to students, faculty and staff.
“Quite frankly, this is just becoming way too familiar. And it should not be familiar,” Elizalde told reporters.
At the same school last April, a student was shot in the leg while in class. A teacher in the classroom prevented the situation from escalating any further.
