His dad, Jeff, said the stabbing happened when another student was angry after being told he was sitting in the wrong seat, as reported by the NBC affiliate KXAS-TV.
“That what it was over,” he said.
“Something so small, so trivial.”
Metcalf and his attacker, later identified as Karmelo Anthony, didn’t know each other.
Anthony, also 17, has since been charged with murder, according to Frisco cops.
Metcalf’s brother, Hunter, desperately tried to save him.
“I tried to whip around as fast as I could,” he told the ABC affiliate WFAA-TV.
Hunter said he looked at his brother and held onto him as he was given CPR.
Metcalf, a linebacker, was stabbed after taking part in the shotput and discus events that had taken place at the David Kuykendall stadium in in Frisco, Texas, earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Anthony had already competed in the 100 meter sprint, recording a time of 12.38 seconds.
He was expected to take part in the long jump.
More than 100 students were at the stadium when the stabbing unfolded.
The student athlete was a star on the football team and had received offers from colleges.
Jeff, a real estate agent, paid a glowing tribute to his son, hailing his leadership skills.
“He was a leader of men.”
I tried to whip around as fast as I could.

Jeff also said his son had a smile which could “light up a room” and said he had a “bright future.”
“He was on the right track,” he told KXAS.
But, he said the stabbing had left him “shaken to the core,” according to a Facebook post.
“I can’t describe the range of emotions I am feeling,” he wrote.
“I pray God will guide our paths moving forward.”
Tributes have been paid to the athlete following his death.
“I’d probably call him a brother,” pal Gavin Stites told the CBS affiliate KTVT-TV.
“I’ve known him since I was five years old.
“If I need anything from him, he was there.”
Stites revealed that Metcalf would get his team motivated before taking to the field.
Just days before the tragedy, Jeff revealed Metcalf had caught his first hog on a hunting trip.
“We stalk hunted all weekend and saw some amazing wildlife,” he said.
Cops didn’t reveal the exact location where the stabbing happened.
But, investigators were seen in the stands surveying the scene.
