Dodgers to Utilize Bullpen Game This Week Against Cubs

Far too often last year, the Dodgers were put in situations that essentially any other team probably couldn’t survive.

A mass amount of injuries necessitated situations where the bullpen was relied on to carry the team to win after win. It was something inconvenient and less than ideal, though wildly fascinating considering how reliant the team was upon its ‘pen.

Heading into this season, the team was supposed to have unrivaled pitching depth to the point where the dreaded bullpen games were going to be a thing of the past.

Well… think again.

According to manager Dave Roberts, the Dodgers will “piece it together” and use a bullpen game Wednesday in Chicago versus the Cubs.

This is a story we’ve all seen before with the Boys in Blue. A couple of injuries to starting pitchers crop up, and the team is forced to adjust in a way other ballclubs would struggle to do.

This situation is largely based on Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki continuing to operate on the same schedule they used in Japan, meaning the two will pitch once a week for the foreseeable future.

With Dustin May going in the first contest of the short two-game series, it’s anyone’s guess as to who will start the second game. The Dodgers could call up a pitcher to eat some innings. They could also just let the bullpen ride with a day off Thursday after Monday’s off-day.
