It could always be worse is not the mindset one wants to carry frequently, but as the Dodgers get set to welcome the Rockies for a three-game series, one might be best served to follow that train of thought. While LA dropped two in a row to the Cubs, the Rockies failed to score a single run in a three-game set in San Diego, losing them by a combined score of 16-0.
Dustin May will be the chosen option to try and keep this scoreless run of the Rockies going on Monday night, and limiting runs has been right up his alley early in the 2025 season. While the strikeouts haven’t been there, something common throughout May’s career, he has allowed but a single earned run across two starts and will face a struggling offense again.
Interestingly enough, May has four career appearances against Colorado, and they’ve all occurred at Dodger Stadium, with the righty yet to make the daunting trip to Coors Field. May has a 2.81 ERA across 16 innings versus the Rockies.
Speaking of experience against the upcoming adversary, Antonio Senzatela, the Rockies scheduled starter, hasn’t fared all that well in his many trips to Dodger Stadium, bringing a 5.45 ERA over 39⅔ innings of work in Chavez Ravine.
Since MLB changed the schedule and reduced the number of divisional games in a season, the Dodgers have had two straight campaigns with the Rockies as their favorite victim. In 2023 and 2024, the Dodgers went 10-3 against Colorado, their best record against any divisional opponent in each season. Perhaps a series with the Rockies is just what the doctor ordered for Los Angeles to get back in a groove, having lost six of their last nine.
On the other hand, having recently been punished by a familiar face, as Michael Busch delivered quite the series in his former home park, the Dodgers could experience a similar issue against Colorado. No one is really hitting particularly well for the Rockies, but one of their two bats on quite a run to start the year is none other than Kyle Farmer. Now Colorado’s starting second baseman, Farmer is hitting .349 in 48 plate appearances with six extra-base hits. May and company will have to keep an eye on the former Dodger.
