The Eagles made a move this offseason to trade one backup quarterback and acquire another. However, there was speculation that they had their eye on someone else before finalizing the deal.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the New England Patriots traded quarterback Joe Milton III and a seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Dallas was in need of a reliable backup quarterback after Cooper Rush signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
Milton, selected by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2024 draft, appeared in one game last season. He completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions and ran for another touchdown in a regular-season finale victory over the Buffalo Bills.
Although Milton ultimately landed in Dallas, several teams were reportedly interested in trading for him, particularly with Drake Maye solidifying himself as New England’s franchise quarterback. Milton possesses the arm talent to make all the necessary throws in a route tree, especially when targeting deep down the sideline. According to Boston Globe NFL reporter Ben Volin, the Eagles explored a potential trade for Milton.
The Eagles traded last season’s backup quarterback, Kenny Pickett, to the Cleveland Browns in March in exchange for quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 2025 fifth-round pick. Thompson-Robinson appeared in 15 games for the Browns, starting five. He completed 52.6% of his passes (121 of 230) for one touchdown and 10 interceptions. Although Pro Football Reference reported that 22 of his passes were dropped, his interception total was high, and the Eagles’ coaching staff will work with him to reduce that number.
Thompson-Robinson is expected to start as the third quarterback on the roster but could compete with Tanner McKee for the backup role behind Jalen Hurts.
