Mac Jones attempted to revitalize his career last season after the New England Patriots traded him to his hometown Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jones got another crack as a starting quarterback when Trevor Lawrence went down with a shoulder injury. The 2021 first-rounder went 2-5 with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in his seven starts for the Jaguars. He hit the free-agent market and Jones will reportedly find another opportunity since his crashing ending with the Patriots in 2023.
Jones and the San Francisco 49ers agreed to a two-year deal for $7 million, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
The 49ers held the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, where head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch showed interest in the Alabama product. Instead, San Francisco opted to draft North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance with that selection, which never panned out in a quarterback shuffle with Jimmy Garoppolo and eventually Brock Purdy.
The Patriots then drafted Jones as the fifth quarterback of that draft class at No. 15 overall. He had the most immediate impact with a 10-win rookie season with a playoff berth and finished as the runner-up for Offensive Rookie of the Year. His next two seasons with coaching instability led to a startling decline that ripped away his potential. Now, the 49ers get the chance to reassess their 2021 decision and potentially restore Jones as a backup behind Purdy.
