Fernando Alonso crashes out of Australian GP in dramatic wet race

Fernando Alonso crashed out of the Australian Grand Prix on lap 34. He ran wide onto the kerb of Turn 6, upsetting the car and spinning it. His Silverstone machine’s rear end hit the wall, bringing his race to an end.

After Isack Hadjar, who crashed during the formation lap, Jack Doohan and Carlos Sainz, who individually crashed on Lap 1, the the 43-year-old becomes the fourth driver to retire from the 2025 season opener.

The safety car was deployed after the Spanish driver crashed at Turn 7, prompting a number of pit stops. The majority of drivers have opted for hard tyres due to the drying conditions. Max Verstappen has chosen mediums. Alonso’s team-mate Lance Stroll pitted for hard tyres.

Alonso was unharmed.

Speaking ahead of the race, the two-time champion explained:

“I’m happy with today’s feeling, first qualifying of the year, the first moment that you are in the same moment with the same conditions to everyone, so there is always a little bit of curiosity on where are you, so we were in the top 10.

“We were quite fast, then yeah, I made a mistake in Q2, run one. I went a little bit wide in Turn 10, I think I had damaged the floor a little bit.

“So in Q2, I was not maybe 100% with the car, even though still, P12 with a not perfect car… so maybe Q3 was possible today and to be the first qualifying of the year, I think it’s a good sign.”
