First Alert Weather Day issued Wednesday for pop-up thunderstorms

  • Warm and sunny start tomorrow
  • Isolated thunderstorms possible Wednesday afternoon
  • Cool and wet for the second half of the week

It’s been a beautiful day, and PDX officially reached 80° this afternoon! This ties the record for the warmest March day and the second-earliest 80° at the airport. This morning our low temperature was 51 degrees, breaking a daily record warm low. (Previous: 49° in 1952)

Several other areas shattered daily records this afternoon…

Record Heat Tuesday(KPTV)

Partly cloudy skies linger into the overnight hours. Lows tonight will be in the mid 50s, likely breaking another record warm low at PDX. (Record: 51° in 1943)

WEDNESDAY (FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY)

Wednesday will be an interesting day due to a strong storm offshore. We will start off the morning mainly sunny and dry, but clouds will begin to increase in the late morning hours. Highs will get into the upper 70s around Noon.

First Alert Weather Day Wednesday(KPTV)

The area of low pressure will hug the coastline Wednesday afternoon, bringing a southerly flow of moisture to the Pacific Northwest. This is the perfect setup for some pop-up thunderstorms in the afternoon. Clouds will be a key factor on the amount of energy the atmosphere will have to work with Wednesday. If we get sunbreaks midday, the threat for storms will increase.

Right now, the chance for storms looks to be anywhere from 2 – 7 p.m.

We’ve issued a First Alert Weather Day Wednesday because of the increased severe threat. It’s a good idea to have several ways to receive weather alerts… The main threats are strong wind, lightning, downpours and small hail. Scattered power outages are possible too.

THURSDAY – FRIDAY

Cool and showery conditions return for the second half of the week. High temperatures will decrease to near-normal, which is the mid to upper 50s this time of year.

LOOKING AHEAD: END OF MARCH

Saturday will be mostly dry with highs in the upper 50s, so there shouldn’t be any weather-worries for the Portland Thorns game. Showers return Sunday afternoon and last into Monday as we wrap up the month of March.
