Flooding, power outages seen in Memphis as storms move through

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some areas in Memphis began to see flooding as severe storms moved through the area Wednesday night.

By late Wednesday, more than an inch of rain had already fallen in most of Memphis, with much more expected over the next several days.

ABC24’s Lauren Turman was in the Whitehaven area, where she saw water up to her calf.

Some drivers were seen attempting to navigate the flooded streets.

Power outages were also being reported in the Memphis area. As of 2 a.m., more than 6,800 customers were impact, according to Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW). Check the latest power outage map here.

Shelters were set up in Memphis ahead of the storms. The Mid-South was under a rare 5 out of 5 severe weather risk, and numerous tornado warnings were issued throughout the night and into the overnight hours.

Tennessee Emergency Management (TEMA) Director Patrick Sheehan issued a State of Emergency Wednesday night. In addition to the State of Emergency declaration, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee requested a federal emergency declaration for the state to allow access to FEMA funding for affected areas.

A ‘potentially dangerous situation’ Flood Watch remains is in effect for Memphis and all of the Mid-South through Sunday. Some part of the Mid-South could see up to a foot of rain through Sunday.

If you live along a creek, stream, or river that rises quickly with heavy rain, prepare and plan now for flooding. Know a route to safely evacuate if needed. If you see a flooded roadway, never drive through it. Remember to turn around, don’t drown.
