One of the more notable NFL free agents this offseason to have previously played for the Alabama Crimson Tide, former quarterback Mac Jones officially found a new home at the professional level Wednesday night by signing with the San Francisco 49ers.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jones’ deal with San Francisco is for two years and $7M with $5M guaranteed. The deal according to Rapoport also has a max value of $11.5M.
A former first round pick from the 2021 NFL draft, Jones is coming off a 2024 season in which he started 7-of-10 games with the Jacksonville Jaguars, his first with the organization. Over those 10 games, Jones completed 65.3% of passes for 1,672 yards with an 8:8 TD:INT ratio, while also rushing for another score.
Prior to last season, Jones spent three seasons in New England as the Patriots starting quarterback from 2021-23 after the organization drafted the former Alabama standout. In New England, Jones started all 42 games which he played, while also selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021 as a rookie.
The former Alabama quarterback now heads to San Francisco where Jones is expected to be the primary backup to starter Brock Purdy in 2025.
