GHENT, WV (WVNS) – Nintendo fans are eagerly awaiting the Direct that will provide more insight on the previously announced Switch 2. Set to premiere on April 2, 2025, the Nintendo Direct is set to give information about the system, putting to bed any rumors in the community about the console’s capabilities.
So what are people expecting anyway? Well, there is very little information out right now other than “hey, there’s a new system and it looks like this,” so there has been plenty of room to speculate – and speculating with little to no information is something we gamers sure love to do!
We know that the screen is going to be bigger. We saw as much in the announcement trailer when they showed the current switch and the screen expanded into a larger one as it transformed into the Switch 2. What we don’t know about this screen for the Switch 2 is what percentage of the “screen” is actually the display and what percentage is the black border housing that display. A lot of speculation online anticipates that the display will extend further outward, taking up a larger total percentage of the screen. On the subject of the display, it is likely we will see some upgrades in terms of graphics, although we don’t have something to really compare this system to the old one adequately just yet. Many fans and alleged “leakers” have touted the idea of specs that would put the base model of the Switch to shame.
In the announcement trailer we also see the placement of the speakers shift. This is likely in an effort to provide better audio quality. The kickstand also appears far more sturdy in the first look as it leans back further and covers a greater area, providing more balance.
Here is one of the biggies though – the controllers.
The Nintendo Switch joycons have been…certainly one of the controllers of all time. That much is for sure. While the idea of the joycons is great and all, their susceptibility to joycon drift can render them all but useless. It is something that has prompted many people to just opt for a wired controller rather than using the joycons at all when they can. These new controllers for the Switch 2 are a whole different ball game though; they are what really have people talking. The controllers, rather than sliding down the side and making the iconic clicking sound that people have come to expect from the switch, they just plug into the side.
This was one of the many things that had the internet talking. People immediately speculated that the tiny protruding piece that the controllers attached to would be easily broken off with memes about how easy the system would be to break appearing online near immediately. Luckily, upon a more careful inspection in the trailer, the sides of the system seem to guard the piece a bit, housing it in a hollow space with the sides as sheltering pieces. This would mean you would have to break a substantial portion of the system’s edge if you were going to break that piece (not saying it’s impossible…it would just be unlikely based on looks). These new controllers also release from the system with a different type of button and only sport a splash of color.
Now, let’s talk a little speculation. The big thing about the Switch 2 controllers online is that they might also function almost like a computer mouse. People have latched onto this idea after seeing them slide across a table in the intro trailer. This has prompted a whole slew of online talk about what this could mean for functions in games. There are also games that are already deemed to be specifically for the Switch 2, so a function like this would make it impossible to play them on the base Switch.
Regardless of speculation, we will all just have to wait and see what is to come when the Direct drops at 9 AM on April 2nd!
