Harlingen hit by 18-20 inches of rain, flooding streets, airport shut

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The city of Harlingen received anywhere from 18 to 20 inches of rain in Thursday’s catastrophic storm.

Officials say many streets in the city are flooded, including parts of downtown and Tyler Street.

On the city’s west side, Stuart Place Road is heavily underwater. It took some residents more than half an hour to travel from the expressway to Wilson Road.

There are several water rescues taking place in that section of town.

The National Weather Service says the Arroyo Colorado has surpassed 25 feet.

Valley International Airport was forced to close on Friday because of widespread flooding throughout the facility.

The airport says all flights in and out of VIA are canceled for today.
