Former Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas came in the defense of the Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James. Arenas also discussed the 20-year-old’s potential in the NBA if given more playing time. Since his debut, Bronny has consistently been in the spotlight.
Son of all-time Lakers great, LeBron James, the Bronny has been constantly facing scrutiny in his rookie season. There has been constant debate on whether he has been treated fairly, or receiving special privileges for being the son of the 21-time NBA All-Star.
Amidst the criticism, Arenas has defended Bronny, stating that with more playing time, he has the potential to be a top contender for Rookie of the Year.
Speaking on his Gil’s Arena podcast, the three-time All-Star said, “If they played him 36 minutes, he would be averaging 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists. He’d be top 5 for Rookie of the Year.” Notably, Gil’s statement came in regard to Bronny’s stats in the NBA this year.
While he is averaging 20.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game in the G League, his NBA stats are far from impressive.

The youngster has only 18 NBA appearances under his belt, where he averages only 1.4 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. He has played at an average of 4.2 minutes per game in the league.

The 2003 NBA Most Improved Player also spoke about the constant criticism that Bronny James has been receiving ever since his debut. Defending the youngster, Arenas questioned since when a rookie has been attacked in the NBA. “When have we ever attacked a rookie player? We still haven’t even attacked last year’s players for flopping, if any of them flopped,” said Gilbert.
He added, “Last year, what’s the top ten? Do we know any of them, besides Wemby (Victor Wembanyama)? We’re talking about 40-50 million dollar people. And we have nothing to say about them.”
The 43-year-old continued, “As hoopers, you give them the opportunity. You know (expletive) well those first couple of games Bronny gets in one minute, three minutes, five, he ain’t playing well. Number one picks don’t even play well with that kind of time. So, you’re targeting.”
