Holland not committed to 170 after UFC London: ‘It’s the next assignment’

Kevin Holland will continue to fight as much as possible at any weight class, despite the uneven results.

We’ve cataloged the many rises and falls of “Big Mouth” over the years as he jumped between Welterweight and Middleweight, accepting fights that are stylistically bad for him. He returns to 170 pounds this Saturday (March 22, 2025) at UFC London (wise) against Gunnar Nelson (not so wise).

And despite dropping his last two fights at 185 pounds, Holland claims this latest move to 170 pounds isn’t permanent.

Timeline To Irrelevance: Can Holland Save Career At UFC London?

“It’s the next assignment I’ve been given,” he said during UFC London media day (watch that here) of the Welterweight bout. “I’m just trying to focus on the task.”

He explained his willingness to jump back in the cage as soon as possible despite injuries that have hampered his performances.

“I’ve thought about [taking a break] before, but every time I think about sitting down for a while, they call me,” Holland said. “And I’m like, ‘Hell yeah!’ After I hurt the rib, it would have been smarter to sit down. But, at the end of the day, it’s like sitting at home is kind of boring, so … happy to be here.”

While Holland recently admitted he needed to clean up his game after his second consecutive loss, he listed some other priorities on media day.

‘Hopefully I’m In A Listening Mood’

“I get paid to fight. I get paid to entertain people,” he said. “So it’s like, number one goal is to entertain people. Second goal is to fight. But I can’t entertain people if I’m not fighting, so they go hand in hand.”

That’s a risky way to operate in UFC, where a few losses often result in a fighter getting cut. But, Holland is zen about the whole thing.

“I fight as much as I can until the contracts are completely over,” he said. “And when the contracts are completely over, we’ll see what happens next.

“I’m a hell of a hunter,” he said regarding what ‘next’ could be. “I’ve been buying land lately and, just making sure my my animals and stuff are good. So, just more cattle and more land … I just plan on after it’s all over and done with, I’ll try and stick away from all the fighting and stuff and stick with the farming and the cattle. Hunting only.”

After getting matched against Reinier de Ridder and now Nelson, “Trailblazer” was asked if he had any dream matchups that might suit him better.

Highlights! ‘RDR’ Steamrolls Holland With Quick Choke

“My dream matchup is just always putting more numbers behind the next check,” he replied. “So, just get a ‘W’ so that way I can continue to get to a better spot in life.”

We love Holland for his willingness to fight anyone at any time (literally). But, it hasn’t exactly been great for his career. Indeed, he’s gone 5-6 over his last 11. Yes, those 11 were over the span of three years.

The activity has made him a fan favorite! But, when your paycheck is halved when you lose, being a bit more strategic might be wise.

Quality over quantity.
